Wreaths Across America

City of La Marque will join the more than 1,400 participating locations across the country to Remember, Honor and Teach at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019.

The City of La Marque will join others around the nation to honor veterans who have been laid to rest in their local cemetery as part of the annual Wreaths Across America observance.

Each year, the La Marque Cemetery Board raises funds to place wreaths on veterans’ headstones at La Marque Cemetery, the WWII monument at City Hall and Rising Star Cemetery. The City of La Marque’s goal is to ensure these brave Americans will never are remembered and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration.

Ceremonies begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019, and will include a program with La Marque Mayor Bobby Hocking and La Marque Cemetery Board members. La Marque residents and others throughout Galveston County are invited to participate and help with the placement of wreaths. Volunteers should arrive by 10:30 a.m. at 1709 S Oak St, La Marque, Texas 77568.

Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks that, over the past ten years, has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for freedom.

National Wreaths Across America Day is a free, non-political, community event open to all people. For information, or to make a $15 wreath pledge, visit wreaths.cityoflamarque.org, call 409-938-9255.

Wreaths Across America (WAA) is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992.

WAA’s mission — Remember, Honor, Teach — is is carried out in part by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington, as well as at veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states.

Since its founding, the organization has expanded to include nearly 2,000 local fundraising groups in all 50 states, representing more than 1,600 participating locations, in addition to Arlington National Cemetery.

Every year since 2008, Congress proclaims a Saturday in December as National Wreaths Across America Day. This year, it will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019.
