Galveston County Health District monthly newsletter now available

GCHD Newsletter_8519

The latest issue of the Galveston County Health District (GCHD) monthly newsletter, Pulse of the District, is now available.

Our Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is celebrating breastfeeding mothers, and their supportive sidekicks, with a Super Breastfeeding Extravaganza, set for Wednesday, Aug. 7 10 a.m.-1 p.m. This event is free to the public and celebrates World Breastfeeding Week. We’ll have games, activities and snacks, plus information on the many services offered by WIC. We also recognize National Immunization Awareness Month in August. Parents are surely checking off items on their children’s back-to-school supply list, but don’t forget to add vaccines to that list. They offer the best protection from more than one dozen preventable diseases.

The Animal Resource Center (ARC) is partnering with NBC Universal for its Clear the Shelters national adoption event. The ARC is thrilled to offer $5 adoptions on ALL pets on Aug. 17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. as part of the event. It’s the perfect time to add a furry friend to the family! Also, don’t miss out on the ARC’s low-cost vaccine clinic Aug. 23 and 24. You can also check out this month’s yummy HEAL Cooking Corner recipe – Avocado-Chimichurri Steak with Grilled Asparagus.

Also available is the latest issue of The Coastal Wave, the Coastal Health & Wellness (CHW) monthly newsletter.

CHW is excited to celebrate National Health Center Week, Aug. 4-10. Staff will host a Community Resource Fair on Friday, Aug. 9 8:30 a.m.-noon with information on resources available in the community, plus staff is giving away FREE school supplies while they last.

Hurricane season continues and now is the time to make sure you and your family are prepared. This month’s newsletter has tips on assembling disaster supplies, making an emergency plan, strengthening homes and more. We’re also arming you with some tips to beat this summer heat, along with information on the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke and how to respond to both.
